Rourkela is better for pre-wedding shoots than most people who live here realise. You have water, hills, old temples and open industrial geometry within an hour of each other. Here are the locations we come back to, and what each one is actually good for.
Gardens, wide steps and one of the tallest Hanuman statues anywhere, which gives you scale you cannot fake. Go early. By mid morning it is busy and the light is flat. First light gives you the place almost to yourselves.
Where the Koel and the Sankh meet. Water, old stone and a lot of sky. The last hour before sunset here is the strongest light in the city, and the openness means you can shoot wide without a crowd in the frame.
Worth the drive. Wide water with hills behind it, and the kind of frame you simply cannot get inside Rourkela. Plan it as a half day so the travel does not eat your best light.
Close in and easy. Not the most dramatic option, but if you want a relaxed hour without spending half the day in a car, it works. Good for the softer, laughing frames rather than the epic ones.
The most dramatic backdrop in the region, roughly a couple of hours out. This is a full day commitment and worth it if you want one set of frames nobody else in your circle will have. Check water levels before you commit.
The college where you met. Your street. The tea stall you always end up at on the way home. These are rarely the most beautiful locations and they are almost always the photographs you keep. We build one of these into most shoots.
November to February is the most comfortable window in Odisha. Monsoon gives you the greenest backdrops but needs a flexible date. April to June is workable only at first light or last light, and you will want a change of clothes.
